The phrase “two is better than one” is a favorite saying when it comes to describing the advantages of two things coming together to create a bigger picture. The merging of two ideas, institutions, or other concepts can be great. Some primes examples of that are the fantastic Kanye West and Jay-Z album, Watch The Throne, or Starbucks quenching partnership with Teavana. What do both of these collaborations have in common? Their success. They prove that two is most definitely better than one. By combining two great things, a whole new concept comes to light, one that can charge the way something is, offer new opportunities, and create even more new thoughts and ideas. Collaborating or merging, whichever applies, is a way people can connect and make the world a better place by simply bringing their ideas together.
There are two sides to every collaboration, the positive and the negative. More often than not, we hear only about successful collaborations. This is usually because most people do not pay attention to the failed partnering unless they are thinking of giving it a second shot. One of the most popular types of mergers is the infusing of two universities. This form of collaboration happens across the nation each and every day. Two outstanding institutions of higher learning coming together to create more opportunities and new discoveries for the students that are members of their university community.
Overall, the benefits outweigh the negatives of two universities merging. Merging provides students with an immense amount of new opportunities. Access to new facilities, courses, new library resources, and many other academic aids are available to students, not just from one university, but two. The opportunity to take courses that were not otherwise offered at before a merge can assist students in more ways than one. It allows students a chance at a minor that they never had any idea they would be able to declare. Students also have the opportunity to attend the college of their choice another location. All of these positives will attract prospective students to the merged universities. The large amount of opportunity offered between two institutions can be difficult to find that is why it is so crucial to take advantage of it while one can.
Despite all the positives a merge brings, there are still some negatives to this opportunity providing action. For one, a merge could lead to a possible loss of jobs since two universities (with the same positions in their offices) are coming together. Granted, there will be more students for those in these positions to cater to, but jobs could still be cut. Depending on the specialties of the two universities, some students of certain majors may not receive as many opportunities as others. For example, if one university is primarily a business school and the other is primarily an art school, there may be many less opportunities for the business students since they would not likely be taking any types of art classes. An art student may take a business class or two to learn about patents or trademarks regarding their creations. Granted, the students will have other opportunities, but when it comes to course material they may hit some roadblocks.
Philadelphia University and Thomas Jefferson University are two current examples of universities that are merging. This merge is going to offer students of both universities, primarily, health science students, many new opportunities to expand their education and make the most of their learning experience.
